As Head of Art Affairs at the Amsterdam UMC art collection, I divide my time between two hospital locations: AMC and VUmc. With a background in Art History and Cultural Heritage, my work centers around managing and expanding the art collection. Additionally, Ioversee various art commissions for new buildings and construction projects.Managing communications about the collection is also part of myresponsibilities. Additionally, I ensure that patients, visitors, staff, and students are informed about the artistic and cultural activities at Amsterdam UMC. Sabrina Kamstra
Sabrina Kamstra worked as an art advisor for research and curator of physical and digital art trails for patients. Her specialization is contemporary visual art and the relationship between art & science and society. At Amsterdam UMC, she was responsible for an art collection of over 7000 works of art and the development of the art policy based on stimulating an interaction between art and patients, employees, students and researchers. To implement the art policy, she curated many exhibitions, commissioned site-specific art, developed art programs for medical education, gave lectures and readings, and stimulated collaboration between artists and scientists through debates.Art adds value in an unexpected place like a hospital because it appeals to universal values that can help you relate to life.
Sabrina was trained at the University of Amsterdam as an art historian. She began as a curator at the De Appel Foundation in Amsterdam and then served as Director of Cultural Affairs at the Japan-Netherlands Institute in Tokyo for a period of seven years. From 1999, she has been Head of Art Affairs Amsterdam UMC. She has also been a crown member of the Council for Culture, a board member of the Amsterdam Arts Council and an advisor to the Mondriaan Fund and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.
Now she is an art curator, advisor and podcast maker and holds various administrative and advisory positions. She lectures regularly and has several publications and books to her credit:
